Treating The Symptoms

As a child, when we have a headache, we try to fix the headache. When we have a runny nose, we try to fix it. When we have a sore throat, we try to fix it. We never realize that those separate things are actually connected, that they are symptoms of a much larger, more complex, problem within our bodies.

As we grow older, we begin to realize these things and while we may still treat a single symptom, once we experience a few symptoms at the same time, we realize we have a bigger problem and begin to work to fix it.

Late last night (in fact, roughly 4.5 hrs ago), the Senate Healthcare Bill passed a crucial procedural vote. Throughout the night and this morning, I’ve seen cries throughout the online world that we need to get the Democrats out of power. They said our Republic has died.

These same people have been saying the same thing after every vote in Congress that doesn’t go their way over the past year and a half or so, and for 6 years or so before that, it was the people defending the current actions who were making the same claims about the things they disagreed with.

The problem is, these people tend to try to treat single symptoms without ever realizing that there is actually a much larger, more complex problem that is causing this.

The problem is that there is no difference among the ‘two’ major Parties any more. They pander to different crowds, but both ultimately want the same thing: more power and more government to do whatever their particular crowd wants them to do. It could be war in one place with one crowd vs another place with another crowd (Iraq vs Afghanistan). I could be Federal takeover of one area with one crowd vs another area with another crowd (Education vs Healthcare). It could be governments ignoring due process in one respect with one crowd vs another respect with another crowd (terrorism vs discrimination).

Yet people continue to try to treat one problem by introducing another. They try to cure the Common Cold by giving themselves Step Throat, and then wonder why they still have a headache, runny nose, and sore throat.

No, the solution is to cure the problem once and for all. To break the dominance of the single Party, the Big Government Party. To work for shared power among a variety of Parties, so that no one Party can ever truly rule. Compromise IS the best, most egalitarian, way for government to be run. It respects that all people are people of principle, but that not all people share the same principles.

When we have a situation, as we do now, where government at all levels is effectively dictated by a single Party, we ALL lose.

Please, join me in working to allow ALL of our voices to be heard. With equal ballot access for all Parties and individuals, we can cure the disease of single Party government.

Or would you rather simply treat the symptoms?
